Part Manhattan and part Martini, the Martinez has appeared in cocktail books going all the way back to 1884. The recipe that most resembles the one served today comes from legendary bartender Jerry Thomas and includes Old Tom gin, a sweeter take on the juniper spirit. The story goes that Thomas himself might have invented the cocktail for a customer traveling to the port city of Martinez, Calif. The city of Martinez, however, insists that a local bartender concocted the drink. It’s a juicy mystery and one best pondered over what else but a Martinez.
- 1 1/2 oz Gin, preferably Old Tom style
- 1 1/2 oz Sweet vermouth
- 1/4 oz Luxardo maraschino liqueur
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- Garnish: Orange twist
Add all ingredients into a mixing glass with ice and stir until chilled.
Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
Garnish with an orange twist.
