New York City's Best Dive Bar

New York City's Best Dive Bar

Best dive bar, best East Village bar, best New York bar, best end-of-the-night bar — Lucy's is all these, and a great jukebox bar. From Johnny Cash to Johnny Rotten, there’s something for everyone.

The bar showcases Formica tables, wood paneling, cheap and strong rail drinks, two beaten up pool tables, incredible bathroom scrawl to rival the Raven in D.C., classic overheard New York conversations, and red fluorescents that make you feel like you're about to do something illegal.

Of course, the most important feature of Lucy’s is Lucy herself. There she is, year after year, behind the bar, smiling, asking what you want to drink with her Polish accent, and hair that, let’s face it, just can’t be real. Get there too early and you feel more like a barfly than anywhere else, get there too late and you’ve got no shot at a table.

In a city that constantly reinvents itself, where places need time to fashion the just-right patina, and exist in worn-out perfection for only so long before being torn down and out, Lucy’s has managed the perfect balance of bar dents, forgotten kisses, and shots to make it an East Village institution. It’s almost enough to make the worst cynic love his city again.

Cosmopolitan

The legendary Cosmopolitan is a simple cocktail with a big history. It reached its height of popularity in the 1990s, when the HBO show “Sex and the City” was at its peak. The pink-hued, Martini-style drink was a favorite of the characters on the show. It made its debut during the second season and became a series regular after that.

For a good decade, the Cosmopolitan may have been the most popular cocktail in America, and bartenders couldn’t work a shift without making dozens of them for thirsty patrons. Naturally, its ubiquity spurred countless riffs, from the White Cosmo (St-Germain in place of Cointreau) to versions featuring gin. While the drink isn’t as popular today as it was in its heyday, the classic recipe is still very much alive.

According to bartending legend and author Gary Regan, the original Cosmopolitan was created in 1985 by Miami bartender Cheryl Cook while working at a South Beach bar called the Strand. Eager to invent a new cocktail for the Martini glass, Cook riffed on the classic Kamikaze by using a newly introduced citrus-flavored vodka, plus a splash of cranberry juice.

There’s some debate about who created the original Cosmopolitan. Many believe, like Regan, that it was first mixed by Cook. Others believe that Dale DeGroff concocted it at New York City’s Rainbow Room, or that Toby Cecchini first devised a Cosmo in 1988 during his tenure at New York’s Odeon. However, all agree that Cecchini popularized the vodka-and-cranberry ’Tini. His version of the drink called for 2 ounces of Absolut Citron vodka, an ounce of Cointreau, an ounce of Ocean Spray cranberry juice cocktail and an ounce of fresh lime juice, with a lemon twist.

The Cosmo was a product of its time. In the late-1980s and early-’90s, vodka was king, but flavored vodka was just finding an audience. When Absolut released its first flavored vodka, the lemony Citron, bartenders had a new toy to work with. Cecchini used it in the Cosmo alongside Ocean Spray, and the vodka-and-cranberry duo is still the preferred pair at most bars today. You, of course, can use whichever citrus-flavored vodka and cranberry juice you like. Just remember: Don’t drown your drink in cranberry. Other cocktails like the Sea Breeze call for a heavier measure of cranberry, but here the juice is meant to be only an accent, adding a touch of tartness and color.

When it comes to celebrating the season, these places don't mess around.

Christmas in New York City is one of the city's most magical seasons, and while the festivities will likely look a little different this year as the world continues to cope with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there are some traditions that you just can't stop. One grand, albeit unsung, NYC holiday tradition: festive cocktails. Throughout the season each year, some of New York's finest bars transform into winter wonderlands of their very own, while clever pop-up bars dot the city like baubles on a tree. Though it's not yet clear what the bar scene will look like in NYC this December, we've already got visions of sugar plum-inspired cocktails dancing in our heads. So in honor of all of creative bartenders and entrepreneurs keeping the New York drinking scene running, we're highlighting the best places to get your holiday cheer into gear this season and looking back at some of our favorites from the year past.

McSorley’s Old Ale House

As bartender, manager and owner, he helped the East Village saloon survive neighborhood blight and change its ways by admitting women and banning smoking.

Matty Maher, the patriarch of only the third family to steward the venerable dive bar McSorley’s Old Ale House since it opened in the East Village of Manhattan in the mid-19th century, died on Saturday in Queens. He was 80.

The cause was lung cancer, his daughter Teresa de la Haba said.

Mr. Maher, who could trace his career at McSorley’s to a bit of end-of-the-rainbow serendipity in Ireland, began by tending bar at the saloon in 1964 as an Irish immigrant.

He graduated to manager as the beer hall, surrounded by neighborhood blight near the Bowery, tottered at the brink of bankruptcy survived the loss of a gender discrimination case in 1970 that forced McSorley’s to delete the last two words of its durable slogan vowing “Good Ale, Raw Onions, and No Ladies” and endured a Health Department ordinance that, while it banned smoking, had the unintended consequence, Mr. Maher said, of encouraging customers to drink more.

The bar was immortalized early in the 20th century by the paintings of John Sloan of the Ashcan School (one, displayed at the 1913 Armory Show, was said to have been priced at $500 and failed to sell) and by Joseph Mitchell’s 1940 profile in The New Yorker titled “The Old House at Home,” the bar’s name when it was opened by John McSorley about 1854.

Mitchell had distinguished McSorley’s as a “dark and gloomy,” unpretentious and “utterly democratic” place where malt and wet hops contributed to “a thick musty smell that acts as a balm to jerky nerves.”

Mr. Maher was perfectly cast as the publican.

“He was a five-foot-eight spark plug,” the author and journalist Rafe Bartholomew wrote in a memoir, “Two and Two: McSorley’s, My Dad, and Me” (2017), “with the Irish gift of gab, a belly laugh that could fill the front room and an explosive temper when he needed it.”

When an amateur historian challenged McSorley’s reputation as New York’s oldest Irish pub, Mr. Maher commissioned a regular customer, Bill Wander, to turn the tables and prove the bar’s date of birth, which he did.

In 1936, the McSorley family sold the bar to Daniel O’Connell, a patron and police officer, who left it to his daughter, Dorothy Kirwin. In 1964, while vacationing near Kilkenny, Ireland, Ms. Kirwin’s husband, Harry, was stranded with a flat tire when who should come along to offer help but 25-year-old Matty Maher.

Harry Kirwin promised Matty a job at McSorley’s if he ever moved to New York. He accepted the offer, set off for America and ultimately, in 1977, bought the bar and the building it occupies, at 15 East Seventh Street near Cooper Square, from the Kirwins’ son.

Matthew Dennis Maher was born on Nov. 8, 1939, in Kilkenny to Patrick and Ellen (Fogarty) Maher. His father was a farmer, his mother a cook.

After leaving school at 14, he worked for a farmer, drove a delivery truck for a local meat company and caught foxes, providing them to wealthy landowners for hunts.

He married Teresa Mary Brady of County Meath, Ireland. She and Ms. de la Haba survive him, along with four other daughters, Ann Marie Pullman, Kathy Isaakidis, Adrienne Noyes and Maeve McNamara, and 12 grandchildren. Mr. Maher, who died at Flushing Hospital, lived in the Malba section of northern Queens.

Though he retired years ago, Mr. Maher, like McSorley’s itself, was a font of froth and fact about the bar and its memorabilia, which includes a sawdust-sprinkled floor, a pair of Harry Houdini’s escape-proof handcuffs, a wanted poster for “the Murderer” John Wilkes Booth and an icky accumulation of wishbones that dangles from a gas lamp over the bar.

Mr. Maher would explain that the turkey furcula tradition dated to World War I, when departing doughboys, after finishing their last full meal stateside, would hang the bones above the bar as a good luck wish that they would return safely.

As a bartender, manager and owner, he was philosophical, often reminding family and friends, “It’s not what you become in life but what you overcome.”

In 1970, after Mayor John V. Lindsay signed legislation barring discrimination in public places because of gender, altercations erupted at McSorley’s between longtime customers and female newcomers.

“I’m afraid it will be this way for a few days,” Mr. Maher told The New York Times. “They’re a little upset, you see.”

It took a little longer, until 1986, in fact, until McSorley’s added a women’s restroom. Still, Mr. Maher said, the bar somehow survived.

“That was the end of an era,” he said, “but it hasn’t changed McSorley’s.” If anything, he said, publicity over the lawsuit benefited business.

“When I started working for him full time 26 years ago, I was McSorley’s first female bartender and a little nervous going in — wondering what the old-timers would say or think,” his daughter Teresa said. (Her husband, Gregory, is an artist and bartender there, too.) “But my father said these words to quell my concerns: ‘Teresa, just tell them you’re about your father’s business.’ And so, I am. And continue to be.”

NYC’s 12 Best Burgers

What is it about ground beef, heat, and a bun that produces such alchemy? Few foods are as a perfect at satisfying a simple, deep craving. The burger: we salute you. Even more so today, on National Cheeseburger Day. Here is a list of where to get some of the best in town. By Jesse Zanger.

The Best Burgers burger is like the one you’d make in your back yard, if you had one. (Image from http://www.bestburgersshakes.com)

This hole-in-the-wall isn’t much by way of decor (it has only 10 seats), but it has one of the best delivery burgers in the city. Why? Because it is pretty much identical to what most people would make at home, if they could: a classic back-yard burger. Plump, round, big-as-your-fist, juicy burgers that are cooked perfectly. The fries and rings are very disappointing, but the juicy burger is excellent. If you’re looking for delivery in Midtown, it’s the winner.

Get ready for a massive meat bonanza. The Palm is a classic American steakhouse – it opened on 2nd Avenue in 1926, and has since franchised out across the country. The Bozzi Burger, named for one of the Italian immigrants who founded the restaurant, is a huge monster of a meal. It usually has a terrific, faint coating of char that adds a certain, delightful mmph to the flavor. Once you bite into it, get ready for a flood of juices. Afterward, you won’t need to eat for about a week – that is, if you finish it.

The peerless Burger Joint burger and fries. What else needs to be said? (Image from http://www.parkermeridien.com)

It would be impossible to do a round-up of the best burgers in NYC without including the triumphant Burger Joint. At or near the top of almost everyone’s “Best Burger” list, everything about this down-to-Earth place (in the midst of a highfalutin’ hotel) just works. Lines can be extremely long, especially in the middle of lunch hour, but if you can get one of the tables in this small, square reproduction of your college bar, sit down. Enjoy pitchers of brew and perfectly prepared, fresh and flavorful burgers. The fries and shakes are also no joke. One last point: unlike many of the burgers on this list, the Burger Joint burger isn’t too big. It is a small, delightful portion.

The Bistro Burger with cheese and bacon, known to some simply as “joy.” (Image from http://www.cornerbistrony.com)

This West Village institution, which touts itself as one of the last bohemian bars in the area, is well known for the burger that lurks within its small, dark confines. The low-key neighborhood bar has retained its classic charm in the midst of a fast-changing, high-priced neighborhood. That said, it can get quite busy. The Bistro Burger is pretty cheap – now clocking in at a whopping $6.75. It is tender, juicy and delicious. Do yourself a favor if you go, though: don’t bother waiting for a cramped table in the back. Gently elbow your way to the bar, take a seat, and get your burger there while slurping down McSorley’s Dark for a mere $2.50 a glass.

Reviewers lavish praise on Donovan’s, some calling it the best burger in the city. It is a huge, pub-style burger, lauded for its juiciness and perfect preparation. Chase it with a delicious pint of Guinness, enjoy the thick-cut steak fries, and you’re in for a great experience.

The dripping, juicy Five Napkin Burger. (credit: Jesse Zanger/melikeeat.com)

Here is the simplest way to understand the 5 Napkin Burger: onion soup. Imagine, if you will, a bowl of the piping hot concoction. Now, retain the flavor, but swap out everything beneath the gooey cheese and replace it with fresh ground chuck. Voila – that is essentially the 5 Napkin Burger. It is dripping with juice (hence a “five napkin burger”) and slathered with melting gruyere cheese, onions and rosemary aioli. It started out as an item on the menu of Nice Matin, an Upper West Side restaurant, but proved so popular the owners broke it out into its own restaurant franchise. It’s wonderful.

Upper East Side stalwart J.G. Melon has been producing wonderful, juicy burgers since it opened in 1972. There’s a lot of things about the place that work: it’s unpretentious bar atmosphere, the dining room in the back. The round cottage-fried potatoes are also a treat, perhaps a bit too easy to keep popping down. Good thing the portion size – both of the burger and the fries – isn’t too large.

Trust us, the Peter Luger burger won’t look like that for long. (Image from http://www.peterluger.com)

What is there not to love about Peter Luger’s steakhouse? Arguably the best in steakhouse in town also makes a serious burger, naturally. However, it is only available at lunch. It’s over a half a pound of delicious meat – what else would you expect from such a lauded institution? It is an open debate, however, whether it is worth getting the burger after going through the effort to get to the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge. After all, if you’ve gone that far, you may as well get their peerless porterhouse steak (not too mention the unreal bacon appetizer). But burger-lovers will hear the call of the Luger’s burger and sample it to their great delight. It crumbles into a medium-rare mass of meat.

In some ways, the Clarke’s burger is definitional. It’s not too big to grab hold of, with a slim, but very choice, patty. There’s a slice of raw onion tucked underneath the bun, like a buried treasure waiting for you. The Clarke’s burger is so popular, and so well respected, that they now have four satellite locations throughout the city. The original on Third Avenue is the classic locale, retaining its historic, 19th century charm.

A Prime Burger with bacon. (Image from http://www.primeburger.com)

Set in the shadow of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Prime Burger is a throwback to an era of diners and “greasy spoons” that have mostly been priced out of the city. It feels a bit like a coffee shop. The Prime Burger has a lunch special that will particularly appeal to burger-lovers: the Prime Burger deluxe ($10.95, $11.95 with cheese). The deluxe comes with two burgers and fries, so you better be hungry, or willing to share. While the meat of the burger is no great shakes, the key is the relish, which when slathered on gives them extra juice and a hint of sweet, red pepper.

Much has been made of Danny Meyer’s Shake Shack. It burst onto the scene in Madison Square Park in 2004 and became an instant sensation. Lines at the park can be very long, especially during lunch, and those same lines can also be found at their satellite locations. The Shake Shack is essentially New York’s answer to the legendary West Coast institution In ‘N Out, which much to many a burger-loving New Yorker’s chagrin does not franchise here. The Shake Shack provides a high-end, fresh variant of the “fast food” burger type.

Charred perfection from Wollensky’s Grill. (credit: Jesse Zanger/melikeeat.com)

Not enough can be said about perhaps the most underrated, high-profile burger in town. There’s an excellent combination of crunchy char and rich flavor with a marvelous “close-to-the-bone” note. The atmosphere at Wollensky’s Grill is raucous, filled with the after-work business crowd, and the hospitality of the hosts there, who make an effort to get to know you and treat you well, is also part of the experience.

Quick Sauté of Zucchini with Toasted Almonds and Pecorino

We’ve served this dish at The Red Cat since our first dinner back in 1999. It sums up a lot of what I think makes a dish comfortable to both cook and diner: a mere handful of ingredients, each contributing its own important flavor and texture the whole thing held together with a fine extra-virgin olive oil. It’s that simple, but the flavor is very complex and complete.

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for serving
1/4 cup sliced almonds
3 to 4 small zucchini, sliced lengthwise into 1/8-inch-thick slices, then crosswise into matchsticks (about 5 cups)
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
4 ounces Pecorino Romano, thinly sliced into 12 triangular sheets with an old-fashioned cheese slicer or very sharp knife, or shaved into shards with a vegetable peeler

Divide the oil among 2 large, heavy-bottomed skillets and heat it over high heat. When the oil is hot but not smoking, add half of the almonds to each pan. Cook, tossing or stirring, until the almonds are golden brown, approximately 30 seconds. Add half of the zucchini to each pan and toss or stir to coat the zucchini with the hot oil, just a few seconds. Remove the pans from the heat, season with salt and pepper, and return to the heat for 30 seconds, tossing to distribute the seasoning.

Divide the zucchini and almonds among 4 warm salad plates, drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil, arrange the Pecorino sheets in a pyramid over each serving, and get it to the table while it’s still nice and hot.
